HONOLULU (KHON2) — A 63-year-old female hiker is in serious condition after the Honolulu Fire Department had to rescue her from the Diamond Head Crater Trail on Sept. 29.
HFD was first made aware of the woman shortly before 11:30 a.m. when they received a 911 call.
First responders arrived at the trail within minutes, and ascended the trail on foot to find the woman while a landing zone was prepared nearby.
Officials made contact with the woman shortly before noon, HFD said. They then performed basic life support and prepared for her extraction.
The woman had become dizzy on the trail, which caused her to fall and hit the back of her head, rendering her unable to continue the trail, HFD said.
She was transported out of the area and was transferred to Emergency Medical Services.
EMS then took the woman to the hospital in serious condition.
To ensure safety when hiking, HFD says to compare your fitness level to the path’s difficulty level, and to be practical and realistic.
