Kauai struggles with power outages amid Severe Thunderstorm Warning

HONOLULU (KHON2) — KIUC crews have been responding to weather related outages since late Wednesday evening.

As of 7:30 am Thursday morning, KIUC announced they are experiencing the following major outages:

  • Anahola to Haena: Total 3,781 members out over several outages
  • Kapaa: 76 members out
  • Kekaha: 119 members out
  • Kokee: 110 members out

Crews are responding and restoring power as weather conditions allow. Members are advised to remain prepared for extended outages.

Maunaloa Elementary, Molokai Middle and Molokai High annouced their closure Thursday morning due to power outages and severe weather.

HIDOE also announced all their public schools in Maui County will be closing early at 11: 45 a.m. due under advisement from Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) due to severe weather.

The outages are believed to be caused by gusty winds.

Wind gusts have been clocked at 25-45 mph.
