HONOLULU (KHON2) — Two moped riders are in serious condition following a crash in the Ala Moana area on the afternoon of May 17.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, a 20-year-old female operator and an 18-year-old female passenger were on a moped traveling southbound on Keʻeaumoku Street when the driver of the bike lost her balance.
As a result, the moped fell over with the two riders falling into the roadway. While the two were in the street, they were both struck by a 21-year-old female motorist in the adjacent lane, HPD said.
The two moped riders were taken to an area hospital in serious condition. Police say the passenger of the moped worsened to critical condition.
According to authorities, the 20-year-old was wearing a helmet, while the 18-year-old was not wearing one.
The 21-year-old woman stayed at the scene and was not injured as a result of the incident.
HPD has since launched an investigation into the incident and do not believe speed, alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
