Nimitz Highway collision claims life of pedestrian

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A fatal motor vehicle collision occurred just before 9:30 p.m. on May 18 on North Nimitz Highway in the Airport area.

The Honolulu Police Department said that a 66-year-old male driver was traveling eastbound on the highway when he struck a 62-year-old male pedestrian attempting to cross outside of a marked crosswalk.

As a result of the collision, the pedestrian was lying in the roadway when he was then struck a second time by a separate motorist, HPD said.

He was then taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

Neither of the drivers were injured as a result of the collision.

An investigation is ongoing. This marks the 29th traffic fatality on Oʻahu this year, compared to 12 this time last year.
