HONOLULU (KHON2) — Oahu’s selection of a piece of land in Central Oahu for the next landfill is up in the air.
A proposed change in the state law blocks the site from being used due to its proximity to an aquifer.
So what comes next for Oahu’s landfill? Is there another site that could be used? Or will the existing landfill in West Oahu need to be expanded, and continue to have an impact on that community? And what is being done to eventually eliminate the need for a landfill?
Joining KHON’s Gina Mangieri to discuss during a special “Empowered: Landfill Uncertainty” are Roger Babcock, Director of Honolulu Environmental Services, Honolulu City Council Member Andria Tupola, and Henry Gabriel, Honolulu’s Recycling Branch Chief.
