HONOLULU (KHON2) — Want to see SpongeBob SquarePants and all his friends live this summer?
From July 18 to Aug. 3, the Diamond Head Theatre will be hosting “The SpongeBob Musical,” fit for all ages.
Nominated for 12 Tony Awards, the musical tied with “Mean Girls” as the most-nominated production at the 2018 Tony Awards.
Based on the Nickelodeon animated series by Stephen Hillenburg, “The SpongeBob Musical” brings Bikini Bottom to life with songs by Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, David Bowie and more.
“When a musical is this fun, this smart, and this full of heart, it’s not just for kids,” said Trevor Tamashiro, Executive Director of Diamond Head Theatre. “We’re so excited to welcome families, first-time theatergoers, and longtime supporters alike to experience the magic of SpongeBob on our stage this summer.”
The production is directed and choreographed by Greg Zane, a veteran theatre professional with deep ties to both Broadway and Hawaii’s local stage.
At Diamond Head Theatre, Zane has earned multiple Poʻokela Awards for hits like “Singin’ in the Rain” and “Flower Drum Song.”

When the citizens of Bikini Bottom discover that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home, SpongeBob and his friends must come together to save the fate of their undersea world. With lives hanging in the balance and all hope lost, a most unexpected hero rises up.
