150M hot dogs, other facts about how Americans celebrate 4th of July

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The 4th of July is next week, and everyone is dreaming about BBQ, fireworks and fun. Food is one of the most important aspects of holidays in the United States, and the 4th of July is no different. Here in Hawaii, it’s no different.

A new report lays out the best and worst places to celebrate the 13 colonies’ independence from King George.

While Hawaii is ranked neither best nor worst, there were some interesting facts in the report that we found interesting.

Here’s what we discovered:

4th of July by the numbers

  • $8.9 billion: This is the amount Americans plan to spend just on food for their 4th of July gathering.

  • 150 million: This is how many hot dogs that are eaten every 4th of July.

  • $2.8 billion: This is the estimated amount spent on fireworks in 2024 (66% of fireworks injuries occur within a month of July 4).

  • 72.2 million: This is the number of people who travel 50+ miles from home to celebrate the 4th of July with friends and/or family. (The report indicated that this number is up 2.4% over 2024 and setting a new record for the holiday.)

The report also found that is a good bit of stress and worry accompanying this year’s independence celebrations. This is what it discovered:

Survey key findings

  • Debt overshadows freedom: The report found that 79% of Americans said our independence is threatened by the rising federal debt.

  • Financial freedom: It also found that 38% of Americans don’t feel financially independent this 4th of July.

  • Budgeting for the holiday: There were 53% of Americans who plan to spend less money this 4th of July than they did in 2024.

  • Turning in their graves: Seven in 10 Americans think the founding fathers would not be satisfied with the current U.S. economy.

  • Tariff’s impact: That’s with 48% of people indicating tariffs are affecting their 4th of July plans.
