HONOLULU (KHON2) — As we enter the holiday season, it’s a chance to help families and individuals navigate the often unexpected challenges they face.
KHON2 kicks off our Laulima Giving Program “Adopt-A-Family” segment — in partnership with Keiki O Ka Aina — with a family that has suffered a tragic loss.
A sibling and a son are stepping up to help a mom who had to take her five children away from their home because it was not safe, as their father struggled with addiction. That was a decade ago.
Less than three months ago, this single mother was working a night shift when she suddenly suffered a brain aneurysm. Three days later, she passed away.
Her younger sister, who lives in a studio apartment, took her three youngest children, ages 12, 14 and 16, into her home.
Their 25-year-old brother also moved back to help care for his siblings and help support the household.
The children are said to be stable, surrounded by love, and finding comfort in their faith, which their mom strongly believes in.
This family could all use bedding, pillows and blankets.
The 12-year-old son likes Spider-Man and enjoys reading. The 14-year-old son likes Roblox, video games and loves to read.
The 16-year-old son likes sports, especially soccer and volleyball.
And the 18-year-old daughter had just started college, for which Mom took out a loan. For her, assistance to pay for school and a meal plan would be extremely helpful.
As for the 25-year-old son, he could use a sofa bed to sleep on.
Last but not least, Mom’s sister needs money or gift cards to pay for basic necessities such as groceries, gas and more.
She also needs help with the paperwork and legal fees to get legal guardianship.
They also need a larger place to live, all that comes with it and a bigger car. She adds that she could also use help with funeral costs.
In the spirit of laulima, our many hands working together, there is so much we can do to help this suffering family.
