5th person from Aliamanu explosion dies

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Almost one month after an explosion rocked an Aliamanu home a fifth person has died from their injuries.

HPD reports a 29-year-old man died at the Arizona hospital where he was being treated for injuries from the incident.

The explosion happened on Jan. 1, just after midnight when, according to HPD, illegal fireworks were being ignited.

Two adult females were pronounced dead at the scene and another female died at the hospital. Many more were injured. Days later a three-year-old male died at the hospital.

HPD arrested two suspects on Jan. 24 on suspicion of reckless endangering, endangering the welfare of a minor and fireworks offenses.

According to police records, “the suspects attended the New Year’s Eve gathering at the Keaka Street home. While at the gathering, they ignited illegal fireworks and also allowed their three children, ages 15, 10, and 1, to ignite illegal fireworks. The youngest child was injured during the explosion and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment before being released.”
