Big Island fire now 60% contained, no evacuations or structures threatened

HAWAII, Hawaii (KHON2) — The Mana Road fire on Hawaiʻi Island is now 60% contained, the Hawaiʻi Fire Department said.

The fire was first reported on Nov. 7 shortly after 11 a.m. on the Hilo side of Mana Road and has now burned more than 2,000 acres, HFD said.

Since it started, firefighters have completely cut firebreaks around the burn area and have maintained a perimeter with support from the Hawaiʻi Division of Forestry and Wildlife and the National Guard.

Afternoon showers on Nov. 10 could impact the fire site. Additionally, smoke is present in the area as burning continues in interior pockets of the perimeter.

No structures have been threatened as a result of the blaze and no injuries have been reported, officials said. While nearby roads are open, officials said to anticipate traffic.

Officials ask that people refrain from flying drones in the area as well, as drone interference can slow down firefighting operations.

If you observe smoke in your area, stay indoors and close doors and windows, use an air purifier or avoid outdoor activity, particularly for those with respiratory issues.
