HONOLULU (KHON2) — The National Park Service has released body-worn camera footage of a shooting that occurred in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in early March.
The incident happened as police pursued a man that was wanted for shooting at a man then later shooting and killing a 25-year-old woman in Puna–the sister of his ex-girlfriend.
Hawaii Police tracked Isaiah Kaleo Fourshey to a campground in the national park on March 4 and attempted to detain him but Fourshey tried to get away in his truck, which got stuck. He then ran from officers into a nearby wooded area, officers followed.
In the released footage, chatter coming from the NPS officerʻs radio alerts them that Fourshey had a weapon. As the officer approached the wooded area an HPD officer can be heard pleading with Fourshey to stop, not reach with his hands and that they wanted to help him.
The verbal exchange lasted several minutes as the officers, both NPS and HPD, shouted commands and Fourshey responded.
Eventually a taser was deployed by an NPS officer, after which Fourshey is seen pointing his handgun and firing at the officer wearing the body-cam footage.
Multiple gunshots are then heard as the officer runs to safety.
Fourshey seemingly survived as officers are heard stating that Fourshey was still moving. He was taken to a medical center in Hilo where he later died.
The FBI are investigating the incident.
