Clear the shelters and take home Kinako!

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Meet Kinako! Kinako is a 3-year-old, 28-lb Terrier mix who has been waiting 235 days for a home after being found stray in the ʻEwa Beach area in November 2024.

Just like the cozy Japanese treat, Kinako is full of sweetness. He also has a bold, adventurous side and is ready to explore the world with you!

Kinako loves car rides, splashing in the water at the beach, tackling hiking trails and climbing on rocks like a natural-born explorer. He’s the perfect mix of playful energy and loyal companionship, always excited to be out and about with his favorite people.

After a day of fun, Kinako is happy to wind down with you, soaking up the sunset and a peanut butter shave ice (his favorite treat) with the warm, gentle spirit that makes him so special.

Kinako is a Reid Krucky Memorial Fund recipient, meaning his adoption fee is 100% waived and he’ll go home with an adoption starter kit to help him get settled with his new family. Meet Kinako today at the Hawaiian Humane Society’s Mōʻiliʻili Campus!

Empty the Shelters adoption event

From July 5 to July 19, the Hawaiian Humane Society is partnering with the BISSELL Pet Foundation to offer 50% off adoption fees. This offer applies for all adult dogs and cats seven months and older at the Mōʻiliʻili Campus, Kosasa Family Campus at Hoʻopili and select PETCOs on Oʻahu.

Their two campuses are open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., so swing on by to meet your new ʻohana member!

Other ways to help

Not everyone is in a position to adopt, but there are many impactful ways to support animals in need. The Hawaiian Humane Society invited the community to join as their partners by:

  • Becoming a Lap Crasher or Couch Crasher foster, which is a short-term foster program for adult dogs and cats.
  • Fostering, which is a slightly longer foster commitment for all shelter pets that need a home environment to recuperate, decompress, or gain weight and grow strong enough to be spayed/neutered and ready for adoption.
  • Taking a shelter dog out for a field trip through the Hawaiian Humane Society’s ʻĪlio Explorers program.
  • Donating – The Hawaiian Humane Society is always in need of enrichment items for shelter dogs and cats to support their physical and mental well-being in the shelter while they wait to find loving homes.
