WAIMANALO, Hawaii (KHON2) — Drivers heading in and out of Waimanalo on Kalanianaole Highway were quickly turned around after a sinkhole was discovered near Sea Life Park Hawaii.
The sinkhole was discovered following the low-pressure system that impacted Oahu over the past week.
Hawaii Department of Transportation officials conducted a full closure of the highway between Kealahou Street and the vicinity of the Makai Research Pier.
Crews brought in heavy machinery to move coral boulders in place and backfill the undermined portion of the road.
The full closure was issued in an area of Kalanianaole Highway where there is no available detour. Even buses and emergency vehicles were not let through due to where the heavy machinery was stationed.
Initially, the closure was supposed to take place from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2. Crews completed repair work ahead of schedule, allowing the highway to reopen sooner at 11:30 a.m.
