MILILANI, Hawaii (KHON2) — Oahu experienced its 22nd traffic fatality on Friday, April 12 in an early morning crash in the Mililani area.
The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. on Kamehameha Highway just before the Kipapa Gulch Bridge.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, a 33-year-old and his juvenile passenger were speeding down Kamehameha Highway.
Officials said the driver was overtaking other vehicles when he lost control, traveled into the northbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway and crashed into a fence.
After the initial crash, the driver returned to the southbound lanes and collided with a guardrail. The juvenile was then ejected onto the roadway.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded to the incident and treated both the driver and passenger, who sustained multiple injuries.
Paramedics transported them to an area hospital in critical condition. The juvenile passenger later succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced dead.

HPD said the 33-year-old driver was subsequently placed under arrest for negligent homicide.
An investigation is ongoing.
