Eligible veterans receive $20 waiver for car registration

HONOLULU (KHON2) — On Nov. 10, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi signed Bill 62 into law, which gives veterans who are 65-years-old and older a $20 waiver on one car registration.

“Little things mean a lot, every bit helps,” Blangiardi said. “Don’t wanna overstate anything, I also don’t want to understate it because this is tied to our veterans who we have great respect for.”

The bill–introduced by councilmembers Andria Tupola and Augie Tulba–was passed in October.

Nearly 13,000 vehicles are eligible and will cost about $277,000, estimated the City and County of Honolulu.

“Our veterans are local community members, Native Hawaiians, of all ethnicities, who have done much for our country,” said Tupola. “And we hope this little token shows our gratitude on the city’s side.”

The city is still working on the forms. Once available, eligible veterans must apply for the waiver.

The waivers are scheduled to begin in July 2026.
