Fatal Punaluu car crash claims third life

PUNALUU, Hawaii (KHON2) — The 28-year-old female passenger involved in the deadly Punaluu car crash on June 17 succumbed to her injuries and died, according to officials.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office notified Honolulu police on Wednesday, June 25, marking Oahu’s 39th traffic fatality of 2025, more than double the amount in 2024.

Around the same time last year, Oahu’s traffic fatality count was 15.

The incident happened near Kamehameha Highway and Puhuli Street around 8:55 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17.

HPD said a vehicle with four occupants was heading south on Kamehameha Highway when it overturned after crossing into the northbound lanes and collided head-on with a 17-year-old driver.

The 28-year-old driver and one of her 19-year-old passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police reported that none of the occupants in the 28-year-old female motorist’s vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.

The 17-year-old female motorist in the other vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital in good condition.
