Firefighters contain 40% of 250 acre brush fire at Schofield Barracks

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii (KHON2) — Federal and City firefighters are working to contain a 250-acre brush fire on the Schofield Barracks Range.

According to U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii, the fire has been burning slowly since June 3, and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Officials said there is “a lot of fast-burning Guinea grass in the area, and it has been hot and dry the past few weeks.”

The National Weather Service said wind speeds aren’t much stronger than previous days, but it has picked up slightly since last week.

The Army said they currently have three brush trucks, two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and one CH-47 Chinook helicopter responding to the fire.

“West-side communities may get some smoke as the winds carry it over the mountains,” officials added.
