Free Maui training empowers renters impacted by wildfires

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A free community training in Maui is aiming to empower renters displaced by the Lahaina wildfires with the knowledge they need to navigate housing challenges.

Maui Housing Hui and SOUL Law Firm are hosting a Renter’s Rights Training on Monday, April 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Pro Arts Playhouse in Kihei. The event is open to the public and offers free dinner and childcare to make it as accessible as possible.

The session is especially geared toward Lahaina fire survivors who have relocated to rental housing in South Maui, though all renters in the area are encouraged to attend.

“We’ve had a number of fire survivors reach out with questions about their rights as tenants,” said Jordan Hocker, Community Education and Outreach Coordinator for Maui Housing Hui. “This training is really about empowerment — giving people the tools to advocate for themselves and feel supported as they rebuild.”

Attendees will get an overview of the Hawaii landlord-tenant code, learn the differences between assistance animals and pets, review lease and security deposit rules, and understand how evictions and Act 202 work.
