Here’s a breakdown of how you can enjoy your 4th of July safely

HONOLULU (KHON2) – Many of us will be celebrating 4th of July this weekend and when we’re having fun, sometimes it’s easy to let our guard down. That’s why officials want you to remember simple tips to keep you and your family safe this holiday.

Fireworks – leave it to the professionals and watch one of several fireworks shows scheduled across the state. Aerial fireworks are illegal in the state of Hawaii.

For Oahu, firecrackers are allowed with a permit but there is an island-wide ban on all consumer fireworks. Firecrackers may only be used during 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on July 4th.

For Maui, consumer fireworks are allowed without a permit. Firecrackers and firecracker permits are not being issued or sold this year.

For Kauai and Hawaii Counties, consumer fireworks are allowed with a permit. Legal consumer fireworks can only be set off on July 4th from 1 p.m. and 9 p.m.

· Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outside, away from your home and out from under the eaves or overhanding branches
· Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grill
· Never leave your grill unattended
· Check your gas tank hose for leaks using a soapy water solution. If it is leaking, turn off tank and grill, remove and have it serviced by a professional
· If the leak does not stop, call the fire department
