Lost your pet during July 4? Hawaiian Humane Society says to follow these steps:

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The day after the Fourth of July is one of the busiest days of the year for animal shelters across the country — and the Hawaiian Humane Society wants to let pet parents know what to do if their furry friends went missing during the fireworks festivities.

The Hawaiian Humane Society recommends that pet parents act as quickly as possible when they realize their pet has gone missing so they can be one complete ʻohana again as soon as possible.

Should your pet go missing, the Hawaiian Humane Society has a lost animal report that can be filled out online. Those searching for their pet may also file a report by calling the Hawaiian Humane Society’s dispatch line at (808) 356-2250.

The form requests information like your pet’s identifying information, such as species, breed, photos and more.

There is also a Found Pets section of the Hawaiian Humane Society’s website, which can be used to find lost pets that are either at one of the campuses or are temporarily staying with good Samaritans. This section is updated in real time.

Should your pet go missing, the Hawaiian Humane Society urges that you check in with them daily and frequently check their Found Pets section. They say furry friends can show up just hours after a report is finished, and the description provided may not match the Hawaiian Humane Society’s interpretation of the pet.

Those who may find a lost pet are urged to file a Found Pet Report online, and take the pet to a private veterinary clinic for microchip scanning. The Hawaiian Humane Society said they will work with anyone to organize temporary care for found pets, and to facilitate reunions between the found pet and their ʻohana.

For those who find a lost pet but are unable to provide temporary care for the animal, the Hawaiian Humane Society said taking the recovered pet to the Pet Kōkua Resource Center at either of their campuses is best.
