MAUI, Hawaii (KHON2) — Ocean Safety recruits on Maui graduated from their 12-week training program, with the four graduates making their debut as Ocean Safety officers in the line of duty this weekend.
Ocean Safety Recruit Class 9 learned a variety of ocean rescue skills during their training, including medical response skills, vehicle operation and more.
The trainings took place throughout the island, allowing for the graduates to train in a wide array of settings so they are prepared for any situation.
Graduates Makai Farm, Harrison Cannon, James McNeil and Jacob Jacinto celebrated their graduation alongside members of the County of Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety.
Two awards were also given during the graduation, with the award for Best Overall Recruit going to Cannon, and the “Surf 50” award going to Jacinto. The “Surf 50” award was created in memory of fallen Ocean Safety Officer Randy Hillen.
