MLB Draft picks from Hawaii sign with teams

Following the July 16 conclusion of the 2024 MLB Draft, multiple picks with Hawaii ties have signed with their new teams.

Saint Louis alumnus and Cal catcher Caleb Lomavita, the 39th overall selection by the Washington Nationals, signed for $2,325,000. The slot value for the pick was $2,395,000. Lomavita’s bonus was the largest for a player from Hawaii since Waiakea’s Kodi Medeiros signed with the Milwaukee Brewers for $2.5 million in 2014.

Meanwhile, Mid-Pacific product and Kansas catcher Kodey Shojinaga signed with the Philadelphia Phillies after getting picked in the sixth round. While his selection at 192 was valued at $310,300, Shojinaga signed for $257,500. Like Lomavita, Shojinaga was an MLB Combine attendee and therefore was entitled to at least 75% of his pick’s slot value.

Additionally, Cal State Fullerton transfer and University of Hawaii commit Christian Rodriguez was expected to compete for a spot near the top of UH’s pitching rotation in 2025. Instead, he signed with the Baltimore Orioles for $147,500 after getting selected in the 10th round.

Maryknoll alumnus Jacob Remily was selected in the 16th round by the Cleveland Guardians. All Day 3 selections (rounds 11-20) have a slot value of $150,000. As of Thursday, Remily has yet to sign and has until Aug. 1 to do so. College remains an option for Remily, who signed a National Letter of Intent with San Jose State last fall.
