HONOLULU (KHON2) — The monk seal pupping season has begun in Hawaii, and experts are reminding beachgoers to maintain a safe distance from the animals.
Following the birth of pups, monk seal mothers are known to be highly protective and may become aggressive toward anyone who approaches too closely.
Authorities have issued guidelines to ensure both the safety of humans and seals:
- Stay at least 150 feet away from seals.
- Keep dogs leashed on the beach.
- Avoid allowing pups to become accustomed to human interaction once they are weaned, as it is crucial for their development and survival in the wild.
