‘Southern Love’ brings homestyle flavors to Kakaako

KAKAAKO, Hawaii (KHON2) — It’s time to check out some real, homestyle cooking with southern flair as Kakaako favorite, Southern Love, celebrates its two-year anniversary on Queen Street.

WakeUp2Day’s Chris Latronic went live from Kakaako to meet co-owners Corey Love and Elizabeth Martinez and learn more about how they started their dream restaurant while going to college together at the University of Hawaii and raising a family.

Corey said his cooking background comes from his mom, uncle and other family members.

“The further I moved away from home, the more I learned how to cook and eventually, I was always hosting Thanksgivings and now, here we are,” he explained.

Corey showed off his homemade biscuits, which are made fresh every day, homemade gravy, shrimp and grits and chicken waffles.

“It’s been an amazing experience, our kids love being here and we wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Guests can check out Southern Love every Tuesday through Saturday. Brunch is served Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dinner is served from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Southern Love is closed on Sunday and Monday.
