HONOLULU (KHON2) — Two free checked bags will no longer be a perk for all Southwest fliers. The company announced it’s new bag policy will take effect May 28.
“If I’m checking two bags, there’s a good chance I probably would fly Southwest versus any other airline, even if they’re more expensive. I definitely have bags. I think about Southwest,” stated Kent Person, a frequent flier.
The airline stated it would offer two free checked bags to top-tier members in it’s Rapid Rewards Program and those traveling on business select fares.
One free checked bag will be offered to airline credit card holders and other select customers.
“Their profits in the 2020’s hasn’t been like in the 2020’s,” stated aviation expert, Peter Foreman. “They’ve had some pressure from various investor groups on raising their profitability.”
The decades-long practice is what differentiated the carrier from its rivals, according to customers.
“But now it’s kind of like a Delta or one of the other major airlines like United or American,” stated Person.
The new bag policy will take effect in May when the airline will also launch a new basic fare, its lowest price point. Southwest will also get rid of open seating in 2026.
“You will see some people leave and go on to competition because of that. The big question is, ‘Will that departure be enough to compensate for the extra revenue coming in because you’re charging for bags?’” said Foreman.
