KAUAI, Hawaii (KHON2) — A single-vehicle collision that occurred on the morning of June 21 has left a total of four people, including three keiki, hospitalized, the Kauaʻi Police Department said.
According to authorities, a compact SUV with six occupants inside was traveling eastbound on Kaumualiʻi Highway when the vehicle crossed the center line and struck a tree.
First responders arrived at the scene to find the driver, a 29-year-old Kekaha woman, unconscious in the vehicle, alongside five children who were injured, according to officials.
The woman was taken to the Kauaʻi Veterans Memorial Hospital, and was later airlifted to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition, authorities said.
Three keiki were transferred to Kapiʻolani Medical Center in serious condition, while the other two were treated and released from Wilcox Medical Center, KPD said.
The collision resulted in the closure of Kaumualiʻi Highway, which was closed in both directions for about an hour and a half while KPD investigated the scene.
Speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in the crash, KPD said, but the investigation remains ongoing.
