With 22 wins through their first 30 games, the University of Hawai‘i baseball team finds itself at a key turning point in the 2024 season.
Coming off a weekend series loss to Long Beach State — their first Big West home series defeat since April of 2024 — the Rainbow Warriors are shifting focus to a challenging eight-game road trip over the next two weeks, beginning Tuesday at Santa Clara.
The slate features four high-profile opponents, including conference-leading Cal Poly, who enters this week a perfect 12-0 in Big West play. But for head coach Rich Hill and the Rainbow Warriors, the road ahead is not just about physical preparation — it’s about mindset.
“We’re just immersed in the process, you know, of us being the best versions of ourselves,” Hill said. “The opponent is very good. Anybody in in the Big West is really good. So we’re going to take care of ourselves, go back to the drawing board.”
At the heart of that preparation is a commitment to mental training. Before every game, Hawai‘i holds a meeting three hours prior to first pitch. There are no bats or gloves involved — just focused breathing, guided imagery, and visualization exercises. It’s a practice Hill believes is the secret weapon of elite performance.

“I think it’s probably the most important part of the day,” Hill said. “Mental skills are the separator. Whether it’s kinesthetic visualization or mental imagery, the body doesn’t know the difference between what’s real and what’s imagined. If you create high-definition visualization with physical connection, your body is learning that skill. So when game time comes, you’ve already been there.”
That mental edge has paid dividends. The Rainbow Warriors have won 40 of their last 50 games dating back to last season. In that stretch, they’ve outscored opponents 109-67 in the final three innings — a testament to their ability to stay composed and deliver in clutch moments.
“We know where we are,” Hill said. “Backs against the wall, two outs, two strikes — we train for those moments. It’s all about mastering the task at hand, getting in the box with a clear mind, and just executing. It’s pitch-by-pitch, moment-by-moment.”
Hawai‘i opens the road trip Tuesday at Santa Clara, followed by a marquee Big West series at Cal Poly, the conference’s last unbeaten team. That series begins Friday. After that, UH continues the stretch with a single game at USC on April 15 and a three game series at UC Irvine starting on April 18.
