HONOLULU (KHON2) — A 22-year-old man was arrested on attempted murder charges after Honolulu police say he fired a gun at another vehicle in Waikiki during a road rage incident. No injuries were reported, but the shooting highlights what some experts say is a rise in aggressive behavior on Hawaii’s roads.
“The more and more incidents we’re going to have where people get upset — it’s just because there are more cars on the road,” said Steven Wong, owner of Wong Way Driving Academy.
Major James Slayter of the Honolulu Police Department echoed the concern, noting that social media has amplified awareness of road rage incidents.
“It’s sad to see some of those social media posts coming up where people are resorting to road rage or just anger,” Slayter said.
Last month, 38-year-old Nathaniel Radimak was arrested in Kakaako after allegedly attacking two women in a road rage incident captured on security cameras. Radimak was previously convicted in 2023 in California for similar attacks.
Wong, a driving instructor with 20 years of experience, advises drivers to stay calm and avoid confrontation.
“You never know who has a gun,” he said. “There’s always somebody right on the edge who might flip out on you. Just be patient. Drive with more aloha. If someone’s trying to cut in, let them. Don’t freak out.”
Honolulu police also recommend using turn signals early, avoiding sudden lane changes, and not making eye contact with aggressive drivers. If a situation begins to escalate, officials urge drivers to leave the area and call 911.
“Anything you can do to avoid that altercation,” said Slayter. “Don’t try to one-up someone. Don’t get into a verbal argument. A lot of those escalate and become physical.”
Above all, police and safety advocates remind drivers to share the road and show aloha.
“Throw up a shaka — something to show you’re appreciative,” Slayter said. “It goes a long way. Hawaii is known for the aloha spirit. We’re known for being compassionate to one another.”
