Derek Kauanoe, Assistant Professor at the William S. Richardson School of Law joins producer/host Coralie Chun Matayoshi to discuss how Native Hawaiians are understood under federal law, whether Congress has addressed the status of Native Hawaiians in federal law, the distinction between a racial group and an indigenous people with whom the United States maintains trust-related obligations, the difference between federally recognized American Indian tribes and Native Hawaiians, and how overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom factors into these discussions.
