KAUAI, Hawaii (KHON2) — Wilcox Medical Center held its 10th annual Keiki Bike and Skateboard Safety Day on June 28, promoting safety for Kauaʻi’s adventurous keiki.
The free family event was done in partnership with community organizations, giving keiki the space to have fun while learning to ride their bikes and boards safely.
One popular booth at the event featured Wilcox physicians and medical students measuring kids’ heads so they may gift them a multi-use helmet that is properly fitted.
After receiving their new, free helmet, keiki were then able to decorate their new safety accessory with stickers and markers.
Helmets weren’t the only gift at the event — free bicycles donated by Wilcox employees and the Kauaʻi community were given to 55 keiki.
The event also featured a bike skills enhancement course by Kauaʻi Path, where participants were able to learn and practice proper hand signals when navigating turns. There were also skateboard lessons and tips from Play Streets Kauaʻi and Kauaʻi Skate ʻOhana, as well as more interactive activities for everyone.
“We are proud that Bike and Skateboard Safety Day has become a favorite event for both our employees and our community,” said Wilcox President and CEO Jen Chahanovich. “What makes this event even more special is to be able to see some of our Kauaʻi keiki grow up as their families return year after year. It means a lot, knowing that we’re helping to ensure the health and well-being of these kids.”
