Blaze devastates newly revamped playground at Wahiawa park

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A newly renovated playground at Wahiawa District Park was destroyed by fire late Wednesday night, prompting an arson investigation, according to Honolulu authorities.

Firefighters and police responded to the scene around 11 p.m. and found the playground structure fully engulfed in flames.

The Honolulu Fire Department later determined that an accelerant had been used to start the blaze.

The playground had just reopened after a $121,000 renovation, city officials said.

“I am so angry about this. I am so disappointed,” Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said Thursday. “Quite honestly, I’m actually disgusted. We’ve begun a full-on investigation and intend to prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law.”
