Hawaiʻi leaders react to U.S. attack in Iran

HONOLULU (KHON2) — President Donald Trump confirmed a strike on nuclear facilities in Iran, with the president calling the attacks a “spectacular military success.” The attack led to a division in opinions across the country, with one local lawmaker saying the attack has “endangered tens of thousands of Americans’ lives throughout the Middle East and everywhere.”

Hawaiʻi’s delegation in the lower house of Congress expressed their concern surrounding the attack, with Representatives Ed Case and Jill Tokuda criticizing the military move.

“Iran under its current leadership has chosen to be our enemy and cannot possess nuclear weapons under any circumstances, but that end doesn’t justify any means,” Case said in a statement.

His statement went on to question the factors behind the attack, with the congressman saying he expects a full briefing in the near future.

“The administration has not provided the information required to determine whether this attack was appropriate, including whether diplomatic efforts were exhausted, whether there was a risk of imminent attack on our country, and whether the administration consulted in any way with Congress as required by the Constitution and law,” Case continued in his statement. “I return to DC tomorrow where I expect a full classified briefing addressing all of these issues.”

Tokuda challenged the president’s move, calling the move dangerous to Americans across the world.

“I hope that no matter what party you serve in that you find offense in that the president has taken it upon himself to basically pull and drag America into Israel’s war with Iran and as a result of that has endangered tens of thousands of Americans lives throughout the Middle East and everywhere,” she said.
