HONOLULU (KHON2) — When to decorate for Christmas has become a hot topic in recent years in Hawaiʻi.

With retailers wanting to cash in on as much holiday cheer as they can squeeze and with streaming services, like Hallmark, running Christmas-themed programming all year long, people are beginning to want a longer Christmas experience.

So, KHON2.com took a poll amongst our readers and viewers on Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter) to find out what locals think.

Here’s what we found.

When Hawaiʻi decorates for Christmas

In our poll, the vast majority of Hawaiʻi residents said the day after Thanksgiving is the best time to decorate for Christmas.

These voters believe the best way to kick off the winter holidays is to wait until the fall holidays are finished.

The second most votes came in for before or right after Halloween and whenever the mood strikes you. Meanwhile, only one person voted for the beginning of December.

With this in mind, we decided to do a bit of research on how some celebrities who are pretty vocal about their Christmas traditions, including when to decorate.

Finding the right time to sparkle

The question of when to decorate for Christmas often divides even the most festive fans. Some wait until after Thanksgiving. Others, like Kristin Chenoweth, said the holiday season can start whenever you want.

Chenoweth believes people should decorate whenever it makes them happy since finding joy in music, baking and the warm atmosphere of the holidays is the best way to use traditions to bring families together through gratitude and shared memories.

Decking the everything

Actresses Tia and Tamera Mowry agree that early decorating should be celebrated. Partnering with HomeGoods for Deck the Everything Day on Nov. 1, they remind fans that there is no wrong time to embrace the season.

Tia encourages decorating as early as you like, while Tamera focuses on creating meaningful traditions that reflect her family’s story through their Christmas tree.

Whimsy and wonder

Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel fill their Los Angeles home with pastel ornaments and glittering nutcrackers. Their theme is “Winter Wonderland,” a mix of color and craft; and there tends to be several rules when their family decorates for the holidays.

Scott believes holiday decorating should be personal and flexible. So, he and Deschanel focus on sustainability by reusing decorations and adding handmade projects with their children.

The joy of starting early

Many celebrities share the belief that decorating early adds happiness and excitement to the season as it encourages people to begin whenever it feels right and to embrace the joy that comes with holiday traditions.

Whenever you choose to decorate for Christmas, the best time is your time. Don’t let anyone else tell you how to celebrate life.
