HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaiʻi Police Department Chief Ben Moszkowicz said he is committed to serving the Orchid Isle and will not apply to be chief at any other police department.
Moszkowicz’s statement comes after he had previously submitted his resignation at the Hawaiʻi Island police department so he could apply to be the interim chief of the Honolulu Police Department.
While Moszkowicz had the backing of Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi for the role, the police commission appointed Deputy Chief Rade Vanic to the interim chief role.
Following Vanic’s appointment, Moszkowicz withdrew his resignation from the Hawaiʻi Island police department.
“After careful reflection and consideration, I made some decisions earlier this month that I now realize were premature. For that, I am truly sorry,” Moszkowicz said in a statement. “I deeply regret that my actions over the past few weeks have caused pain and confusion for so many people. I take full responsibility for my decisions and actions, and I hope to demonstrate through my actions that I remain fully committed to our shared future.”
He also went on to reiterate his “long-term commitment” to remain in service to the Orchid Isle.
“If the Hawaiʻi Police Commission and the community they represent can find it in their hearts to give me a second chance to demonstrate this commitment, I pledge to remain the chief of police here for years to come,” his statement continued. “I would love to stay here, as your chief, and would publicly commit to not applying to be the chief anywhere else.”
The Hawaiʻi Police Commission is set to meet next month to address Moszkowicz’s resignation.
