Six years after their last preseason appearance at Aloha Stadium, the Los Angeles Rams are reaffirming their commitment to Hawai‘i with a special mini-camp held at War Memorial Stadium on Maui.
The 2024 NFC West champions kicked off the event Tuesday with their first open practice on island, marking the start of a multi-day visit aimed at community engagement and player development.
“Our players understand the platform they’re blessed with to give back,” said Rams head coach Sean McVay. “They remember being in these kids’ shoes, meeting their heroes. It’s about bringing energy and good vibes, and that’s exactly what this group does.”
Among the NFL stars hitting the field were quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Davante Adams, and Puka Nacua, who played in the Polynesian Bowl as a high school standout. Nacua, along with many others hope to help inspire a community that experienced a deadly wildfire in 2023.
“I wasn’t directly impacted by the fires, but I know people who were,” said Nacua. “Seeing how the community came together, we just wanted to be part of that healing, bring smiles to the kids’ faces and show support.”
The team’s visit included more than just practice. Former Rams offensive lineman Andrew Whitworth announced the team’s plans to help rebuild Lahainaluna High School’s locker rooms, in partnership with Hollman Lockers and Forty Nine Degrees.
“When you see these, they’ll be pro-style lockers,” Whitworth said. “This will be an unbelievable experience.”
One of the day’s highlights was a girls flag football clinic hosted by current Rams players, offering young athletes a rare opportunity to learn from professionals.
“The energy out here was amazing,” said Baldwin High School player Kailea Moniz. “Honestly, this one day tops my entire high school season.”
Baldwin teammate Kilikopela Kamakeeaina added, “To see an NFL team care about girls flag football is huge, for the sport nationally and here in Hawai‘i.”
Nacua agreed, beaming after meeting participants. “Everyone playing football here is so close, so united, that’s what sports should be.”
The Rams return to War Memorial Stadium for another open practice on Wednesday morning.
