HONOLULU (KHON2) — The 4th of July means there’s a big party in Kailua. Thousands here at Kailua Beach Park are getting ready for the annual fireworks show.
But the party just started this morning with the town’s annual parade.
It’s a day for everyone to celebrate the red white and blue. Thousands lined Kainalu Drive for the annual Kailua Town Parade.
“It’s just so exciting to see a great turnout of residents,” said Bill Hicks, Kailua Neighborhood Board Chair. “The whole parade route was full of flags, full of good cheer, full of patriotism. We’re very proud of this parade.”
This is the 76th year of the parade. This year’s theme — Waves of Aloha, celebrating the spirit of unity, kindness and connection that residents say defines the community.
“If you’ve never been to Kailua, you need to come,” said Bob Peterson, a Kailua resident. “Whatever part of the island you’re from, come to this cause it’s just patriotic, represents the community.”
Dignitaries like Governor Josh Green, Mayor Rick Blangiardi and area lawmakers were there.
But the stars of the day are the servicemembers, past and present.
Like Peterson, a retired army member who honors all service branches at his home.
And Vince Hill, another retired army member who uses today’s parade to kick off his annual dessert fundraiser for keiki.
“So I sell throughout the year and I have about five to six grand a year in Costco matches what you put in, so it becomes 10 to 12 grand, it all goes to the Kapiolani Children’s Hospital,” said Hill.
A great cause on a great day with a great message for all.
“It’s a time for family and friends to be together and support each other, but you know we all have shared values and we can celebrate them. I’m so happy to see the town turnout every year,” said Hicks.
Peterson added, “Especially nowadays, where the country seems so, you know, I think this is an opportunity to come together. It’s a wonderful country.”
“If there’s a message you can send to your fellow Americans out there, what would be strong believe in America because America is the best country,” said Hill.
