Man, 60, dies following Hilo collision

HILO, Hawaii (KHON2) — A 60-year-old Ocean View man who was truck by a vehicle in Hilo on June 18 died from his injuries, Big Isle police confirm.

The man, who police identified as Terry Lytle, died on the morning of June 25.

According to authorities, Lytle was struck by a 39-year-old man who was driving a van as Lytle was crossing the street outside of a marked crosswalk.

As a result of the collision, Lytle was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center in critical condition, before he succumbed to his injuries, police said.

The driver of the van was not injured and was not arrested according to officials.

Authorities reclassified the investigation from a negligent injury to a negligent homicide. Police say they do not believe that speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision.

This collision marks the 14th traffic fatality for the Big Island of the year, down from 18 fatalities at this time last year.
